How to find a photographer

A picture is worth a thousand words. A pictures lasts a life time. A picture is how you will remember the day for the rest of your life. Pictures. Pictures. Pictures.  If it’s so cliche, why is it so difficult?

I would consider myself and appreciator of photography. I especially enjoy nature photography.  However, I’m never the girl with the camera, and I feel awkward asking other people to take our picture in front of things (even the Taj Mahal-can you believe we have no photos from that?).

After Googling local photographers, I probably looked through thousands of photos of other people’s weddings.  It’s kind of awkward at first. I was trying hard to visualize myself in the photo, but it wasn’t my groom, they certainly weren’t my colors, it wasn’t our venue and it just wasn’t our style. I didn’t know what to look for.

After the first hundred photos of other people’s special day, I began to find something in common.  Some people just looked like they were having so much fun! The expressions on their faces made the color, the flowers and the backdrop irrelevant.  The strangers in the photo either looked really uncomfortable or were simply having fun.  That was it! I wanted a photographer that would catch me being happy on one of the happiest day of my life.  When I started looking at this, it really distinguished photographers from one another.

So, I narrowed it down to interview two photographers based on the fact that their subjects were having fun!  We ended up choosing Lucas Mobley!

We made an appointment to meet Mobley at his in home studio. I was so nervous to talk to him because I didn’t know what to ask or say in order to choose someone to produce work worth one thousand words.  Mobley had a very calming presence.  He took the lead by simply getting to know us.  He asked how we met, and we talked to him like we were getting to know a new friend.  It was very comfortable.  Before I knew it we were discussing a vision for the wedding.

As silly as it sounds, find someone you’re comfortable with!  Not only could I see myself hanging out with Mobley for 8 hours on the big day, but Jeremy and secretly want to be his friend!

Lastly, Mobley was professional. He showed us gorgeous and professional photos and albums.  I’ve heard so many horror stories about the photographer forgetting to put in the memory card or somehow loosing the photos or only providing half the pictures.  We could tell from his work and his in home studio that he had a precise attention to detail.  He was responsible and professional.

It is important to find a photographer that you trust to take your wedding as seriously as you will.  It is important to have someone who will worry about the things you don’t want to think about and consequently create a professional product.

I had so much anxiety over photography, because I wanted it to be right so badly, but I don’t want it to be contrived.  I want to make sure we get all the shots, but I don’t want to be pulled out of a conversation with my best friend to pose in front of the sunset.  I think we struck that balance.  I’m excited to work with Lucas Mobley!
